AIADMK supporters celebrate the Supreme Court's decision to grant bail to their party leader. (Press Trust of India)Bangalore: J Jayalalithaa, arrested three weeks ago, is likely to leave a prison in Bangalore today. The former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Friday on medical grounds. Here are the 10 latest developments:Ms Jayalalithaa, 66, followed the Supreme Court's directive and issued a statement on Friday evening, urging the adoring workers of her party, the AIADMK, to remain calm and not resort to violence, as they have in recent weeks. She was convicted by a Bangalore court on September 27 for collecting land, gold and other assets vastly exceeding her income in a case that had dragged on for nearly two decades. She was sentenced to four years in jail; she has appealed against her conviction and sentence in the Karnataka High Court. (Also read: How Jayalalithaa's 18 Year-Long Trial Ended in 7 Minutes)The Supreme Court on Friday asked her lawyers to ensure that all paperwork for her appeal is completed by December 18, or her bail could be cancelled. "If the paperwork is not filed within two months, then we won't give you even a single day more," the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice HL Dattu said. The top court said it will then ask the Karnataka High Court to decide her appeal within three months to ensure a faster trial than the current case, which dragged on for nearly two decades.Following her conviction, Jayalalithaa, who heads the AIADMK, was obliged by law to step down as Tamil Nadu chief minister. She was replaced by loyalist O Panneerselvam at a swearing-in ceremony where many Cabinet members sobbed into handkerchiefs in an emotional display of fidelity.Outside her famous Poes Garden residence in Chennai today, hundreds of supporters danced joyously, shouting "Amma, Amma" in the pouring rain. (Read more...)Her case was transferred from Tamil Nadu to adjacent Karnataka in 2001 to ensure her political clout would not influence her trial. Jayalalithaa's AIADMK is the third-largest party in Parliament, an accomplishment owed partly to her schemes that entitle people in Tamil Nadu to free grinders, laptops and more.Story First Published: October 18, 2014 00:01 IST

Bangalore: Her three weeks as Prisoner 7402 saw former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, waking up early, poring over newspapers for several hours, eating curd rice for lunch, and taking a walk in the evening, according to jail officials.
The 66-year-old was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Friday on medical grounds. In the Bangalore jail where she has been since September 27, she stayed in a small cell that included a desk and ceiling fan.
"She converses with jail staff in Kannada and is very fluent in English. She also speaks in Telugu and Malayalam," Jaisimha said, adding, "she is disciplined and abides by the prison rules. She has not made any demand in terms of facilities or requirements either to the court or the jail warden," Karnataka Deputy Inspector General (prisons) PM Jaisimha told news agency IANS.
Jayalalithaa was convicted of corruption in an 18-year-old case that was moved from her home state to neighbouring Karnataka in 2001 to ensure her political clout did not influence the trial. She was found guilty of graft in her first term as chief minister in the early 90s; the verdict meant she was disqualified as Chief Minister in the midst of her third term; she picked a long-time loyalist, O Panneerselvam, to replace her.
Though the jail allows visitors (except Sundays) from 10 am to 11. 30 am, Amma, as she is called affectionately by her supporters, refused to meet ministers and other leaders from her party for over a fortnight.
In jail, Jayalalithaa talked often with the three aides who were convicted along with her - to - Sasikala Natarajan, V. Sudhakaran and J. Ilavarisi. Jail officials said she would occasionally allow her aides to see her in her room or walk with them in the evenings.

New Delhi: With exit polls predicting a BJP victory in Maharashtra and Haryana, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar on Friday said the polls predicted "clearly a Modi wave" and that the ruling party was going to do a "Dhoom II" success story in the two states.
Speaking to media persons at the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia, Mr Javadekar said "the overall prediction of exit polls has shown clearly a Modi wave", and added that "if the Lok Saba elections was a "Dhoom" then this is "Dhoom II".
"It (victory streak) is being continued in the same vein," he said referring to the hugely popular Bollywood film "Dhoom" and its equally super-hit sequel.
Mr Javadekar said that the election results are "all about the aspirations of the poor" who want to better their lives and those of their children and not be treated as a vote bank any longer.
"The elections are about the changing psychology of the poor who don't want to remain poor any longer. They want to live with dignity... There is a new change in Indian society. Modi reflects their aspirations... People want a government that can deliver, will deliver on promises and give good governance," he said.
He said in these assembly elections people are not looking to vote according to "caste and other smaller things they used to earlier".
The minister said that the public participation campaign launched by the Narendra Modi government "is changing mindsets and transforming India".
Referring to the Swachch Bharat Clean India campaign, he said it was not just to clean India but the "changing the way we live".
He said under earlier governments the model was that "everything will be done by the government" but now Prime Minister Modi is changing mindsets through public participation.
"People are becoming active agents of change which India needs".
On the economic front, he said the government had "showcased its vision" in the budget and that the petrol prices had come down by Rs.8 and diesel was also set to come down by Rs.2-3, "which shows the government wants to pass on all benefits to consumers".
Mr Javadekar said since the government came in to power in May "all departments have started taking decisions, based on policies", which, he said, should not be referred to as merely clearing of files.
He claimed that under the Modi government "there is fresh thinking in all departments".
"The prime minister takes pains in giving confidence to the bureaucracy. He spent four-five hours with each minister and secretary and discussed all issues relating to the ministry," he added.

Washington: President Barack Obama is naming Ron Klain, a former chief of staff to Vice President Joe Biden and a trusted adviser at the Obama White House, as the point man on the US government's response to the Ebola crisis.
Obama has been under pressure to name an Ebola "czar" to oversee health security in the US and actions to help stem the outbreak in West Africa.
Klain has been out of government since leaving Biden's office during the Obama's first term. The White House said that Klain would report to national security adviser Susan Rice and to homeland security and counterterrorism adviser Lisa Monaco.
Klain, a lawyer, also served as chief of staff for Vice President Al Gore. He previously served under Attorney General Janet Reno in the Clinton administration.RelatedTwitpic to Shutter Service After AllIndia-Born Scientist Rajaram Awarded World Food PrizeSenegal Declared Ebola-Free: WHO
